A welcoming first class starts with clear information. Before booking, ask about the pace, the instructor’s experience and the options for someone who is completely new to the practice.

Look beyond the class name

Labels such as gentle or beginner can mean different things in different studios. Ask whether the session includes floor work, how large the group is and whether you can pause or observe. NCCIH advises learning with a qualified instructor and discussing individual health needs with a clinician and instructor when appropriate. Its guidance also cautions beginners against extreme poses and forceful breathing. A promotional photograph is not a checklist of positions you should attempt.

Make the practical details comfortable

Confirm the arrival time, equipment policy, room temperature and cancellation terms. Tell the instructor privately about relevant needs before the session rather than trying to explain them during a sequence. You can ask whether hands-on adjustments are used and decline them. Afterward, consider whether the instructions were understandable and whether your questions were treated respectfully. There is no requirement to buy a long membership after one class.

Try this, one step at a time

  1. Ask how the class accommodates a complete beginner and what participation involves.
  2. Confirm equipment, access, cost and the instructor’s approach to physical adjustments.
  3. After the class, note whether the pace and teaching style suited you.
